Known Ground is an independent publication built around a simple idea: reality matters.
The internet is full of reviews written from specification sheets, opinions repeated from other opinions, and confident claims made by people with little direct experience. Known Ground exists to do something different. The goal is to test equipment, examine ideas, and report conclusions plainly—even when those conclusions are inconvenient, unpopular, or different from what I expected.
That background influences the way I evaluate things. Reliability matters. Details matter. Context matters. A product does not become good because it is expensive, popular, or heavily advertised. It becomes good when it performs the job for which it was purchased.
What You Will Find Here
Known Ground primarily covers firearms, optics, holsters, equipment, hunting, working dogs, technology, and practical skills. It may also wander into history, culture, philosophy, faith, and the information environment surrounding modern life.
Some articles are detailed reviews. Others are comparisons, guides, opinion pieces, or records of lessons learned through actual use. I will tell you when something was purchased with my own money, when it was provided for review, how extensively it was tested, and where uncertainty remains.
I do not promise perfect objectivity. Nobody is free from preference or bias. I do promise to identify those biases when they matter and to separate what I know from what I merely suspect.
No Manufactured Conclusions
Known Ground does not exist to produce uniformly positive reviews.
Sometimes an inexpensive product will prove surprisingly capable. Sometimes a respected brand will disappoint. Sometimes the final conclusion will change after months of use. When that happens, the article will be updated rather than quietly forgotten.
The purpose is not to protect relationships with manufacturers. It is to give readers enough honest information to make their own decisions.

Known ground is the place from which you can orient yourself.
In an environment shaped by advertising, algorithms, tribal loyalties, and information warfare, it is increasingly difficult to separate observation from persuasion. This site is an attempt to establish a fixed point: direct experience, careful reasoning, honest uncertainty, and conclusions that remain connected to reality.
You may not agree with every conclusion published here. That is not required. The standard is not agreement. The standard is whether the argument is supported, the testing is described honestly, and the writer is willing to correct the record when proven wrong.
